LondonLondon Biggin Hill opens inclusive trial for Runway 03 Instrument Approach |
London Biggin Hill Airport has reached a significant milestone in its ongoing programme of operational development, with the launch of the full trial phase of its new Instrument Approach to Runway 03.
Following authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the trial is now open to all suitably equipped aircraft and operators, marking a pivotal moment in the airport's drive to strengthen its capabilities as a premier business and private aviation gateway to London.
The new approach procedure is satellite-based, leveraging modern navigation technology to deliver more predictable, consistent and reliable arrivals into the airport. By enabling aircraft to operate across a wider range of weather conditions than was previously possible, the procedure significantly enhances operational resilience and ensures that business and private aviation customers can continue to access London Biggin Hill with confidence, even when conditions deteriorate. For operators planning time-sensitive flights into the capital, this level of dependability is of considerable value.

The progression from a restricted initial phase to a fully inclusive trial reflects the confidence that both the airport and the CAA have placed in the procedure following its earlier evaluation stages. With all suitably equipped operators now eligible to fly the approach, the airport expects to see a meaningful increase in the number of flights benefiting from the enhanced access it provides.
Robert Walters, Commercial Director at London Biggin Hill Airport, welcomed the development as a further demonstration of the airport's ambition. "The final stage of the Runway 03 approach trial marks another important step in strengthening the airport's operational capability," he said.
"Alongside our recent wider airfield investments, the procedure gives operators greater flexibility and confidence when planning flights into London Biggin Hill Airport. Together, these upgrades reinforce our commitment to delivering safe, reliable and efficient operations for our customers."
The Runway 03 Instrument Approach trial does not stand alone. It forms an integral part of a broader and sustained programme of airfield investment that the airport has been progressing in recent months and years.
That programme has already delivered a series of notable infrastructure improvements, including the completion of extensive runway resurfacing works designed to ensure the long-term integrity and safety of the airfield's primary surface. Complementing this, the airport has installed upgraded LED lighting and centreline lighting systems, providing significantly improved visual guidance for pilots operating in low-visibility conditions.
Further enhancements have been made to the airport's Instrument Runway Visual Range (IRVR) technology, which gives air traffic controllers and operators more accurate and reliable information about visibility conditions on and around the runway. In addition, the introduction of a 24-hour AUTO-METAR weather reporting service means that up-to-date meteorological data is now continuously available, supporting more informed decision-making by flight crews and operations teams at all hours of the day and night.
Taken together, these developments represent a comprehensive and coherent investment in the airport's infrastructure and technology, all aimed at raising the standard of service available to the business and private aviation community.
London Biggin Hill Airport continues to position itself as one of the UK's most capable and forward-thinking general aviation airports, combining modern facilities with a clear strategic commitment to safe and efficient operations.
