Washington, DCSupersonic flights move closer to return as House passes aviation bills |
The National Business Aviation Association has applauded the House of Representatives for passing four bills that will strengthen America’s leadership in aviation, including one that would allow the return of supersonic flights.
The supersonic bill (H.R.3410) would require the FAA to issue new rules allowing civil supersonic flight in the US, as long as the aircraft is operated to ensure that no sonic boom reaches the ground. The US has not allowed supersonic flights since 1973.
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passed the bill in December. Aviation Subcommittee Chair Rep. Troy Nehls (R-22-TX) introduced the legislation last year shortly before President Trump signed an executive order directing the FAA to take steps to allow supersonic flights.
NBAA also welcomed three other important bills approved by the House:
H.R.2247, which allows pilots to use digital versions of an airmen or medical certificate when required to present such documentation to FAA inspectors, or other officials. Current FAA regulations require pilots to present a physical copy of their certificates.
H.R. 6267, which directs the Government Accountability Office to study barriers to adopting digital documentation for aircraft parts, improving their traceability and helping prevent counterfeit components.
H.R. 6427, which gives general aviation airports more flexibility for construction projects, such as meeting state highway pavement standards for certain runway, taxiway and ramp projects.
“NBAA commends the House for passing these measures, which are key to preserving America’s global leadership in aviation and aerospace,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen.
“Taken together, the bills promote innovation in aircraft development, efficiency through increased use of digitization and investment in aviation infrastructure - all priorities long championed by NBAA and other industry stakeholders. We encourage the Senate to pass the four bills as soon as possible.”
