CARIBAVIA 2025

Embracing the future of aviation, aware of environmental responsibilities

Xavier Lédée in conversation with Alison Chambers

Xavier Lédée, President of the Territorial Council of Saint Barthélemy, would love to have more air connections to his stunning Island.

At the same time, where would more tourists be accommodated? It’s all about keeping the right balance, he says, satisfying stakeholders, managing activity. Keeping on top of housekeeping and retaining St Barth’s high-end tourism model.

"We tend to have regular visitors coming here, we know we have that reputation as a party Island - and after two enforced quiet years - they couldn’t wait to come back. The market has definitely corrected itself, he says. “We’ve just come out of two very over the top years.”

“We pride ourselves on our geographic charm, our French heritage. Both are a key part of our exclusivity. Preservation efforts are vital and that includes ensuring the airport and its systems are up to date. Plans are afoot for a new firefighter station next year, plus ongoing investment in ATC and security. Not just for crime but for privacy breaches.

“We have had our share of social media (celebrity) catastrophes!,” he acknowledges.

During the low season construction activity ramps up - improving the water distribution and storage, adding fibre optic internet, St Barth’s is one of the earliest of Caribbean Islands to introduce Starlink.

Speaking at CARIBAVIA, held this year at the Collectivité’s impressive home, he highlighted his enthusiasm for ‘the aviation of tomorrow.’ “We need to be more efficient, agile, and more attuned to the realities of our changing climate.”

An important part of the Collectivité’s work is tracking coastal changes, investing in infrastructure resilience, preparing for cyclones, and implementing strict urban planning rules to withstand natural disasters. Projects supported by the EU and partnerships with institutions such as Montpellier University focus on improving resilience.

Islands should work together in developing a responsible aviation model

Investing in low carbon technologies, alternative fuels, smarter co-ordination of air routes, is on his wish list - and “why not, the introduction of hybrid or electric aircraft for short haul connections. Here, we are Islands, not isolated Islands and we will work together to lead the way towards a responsible model of aviation.”

You look at St Barth’s unique runway and think it must be one of the most dangerous landing strips in the world - yet there has hasn’t been an accident in 25 years. The airport closes strictly 15 minutes after sunset, Lédée advises.

Embracing the future of aviation, aware of environmental responsibilities

The airport and port are managed together by the Collectivité. This allows for tailored improvements and maintenance, such as ongoing renovations at the port, enhanced yacht docking capabilities, in advance of demand, to ensure that top-tier service quality St Barth is renowned for. It also keeps close to its airlines.

There have been recent discussions with Air France’s regional director on air fare concerns and routes to meet local demand and ensure connectivity. Collaboration with nearby Princess Juliana International airport in Saint Maarten is valued.

Interesting fact: there is one small hospital in St Barths (20 beds). Less than 100 of the 300 babies born to St Barth mothers are delivered in St Maarten or the USA.

The USA is St Barth’s prime tourism market, accounting for 70% of tourists.

He attributes Saint Barthélemy's success to the hard work of many dedicated people, particularly its public servants who keep everything running smoothly. The island functions like a large resort. Close community spirit is so valued and it’s what makes Saint Barthélemy unique, Lédée concludes.
