The Air League launches UK's first electric flying scholarship

The UK’s first electric flying scholarship programme, which will see up to 5 scholarships awarded to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds from across the UK, has been launched by social mobility charity The Air League.

The scholarships, which will take place with Saxon Air at Norwich Airport, will take place on the world's first certified electric aircraft Pipistrel Velis Electro. The scholars will also experience additional simulator time, ground school, and sustainability lessons.

The Air League has been working to promote the importance of sustainable aviation amongst young people, and the Electric Flying Scholarships will ensure a renewed focus on making the next generation of the aviation industry environmentally conscious.

The Pipistrel Velis Electro produces zero emissions during operation and is a two-seat light aircraft intended primarily for pilot training. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of 98 kcas, maximum altitude of 1200ft and a maximum range of 50 minutes.

The Electric Flying Scholarships follow last year’s JetZero Network reception and panel discussion, and the Innovators Global Challenge in 2022. The Air League is proud to be leading the way for the future of sustainable aviation.

Candidates must have a strong interest in sustainable aviation and should wish to pursue the topic further into their career. Applications will close on 7th April, with the successful candidates completing their courses over the summer.

Founded in 1909, the Air League is the UK’s leading aviation, aerospace, and space charity that changes lives. It breaks down the barriers into these industries through its scholarships and outreach programmes.

Ian Morrison, CEO of The Air League, said: “At The Air League, our vision is to change lives through aviation and believe there should be no educational, financial, or social barriers for those who want to succeed. We’re therefore thrilled to be working with Saxon Air to provide the UK’s first electric flying scholarship for the next generation of aspiring aviators who want to work for a more sustainable industry.

“Saxon Air are at the forefront of making the aviation industry more environmentally friendly, and this partnership shows how vital it is for businesses across the industry to support paid placement schemes like this and nurture the next generation of the workforce.”

Ellie Rackham, Flight Training Coordinator at Saxon Air added: "As the aviation industry strives towards Net Zero, here at Saxon Air we are embracing a sustainable future. Our Pipistrel Velis Electro enables individuals to begin fulfilling their aviation dreams whilst incorporating zero emissions into their training. Whilst we acknowledge the challenges, it's a step in the right direction.

“Our partnership in providing The Air League's Electric Flying Scholarship allows us to bring inclusivity into the industry, providing a unique opportunity to selected young people looking to kickstart their career. It will provide them with a solid foundation to continue their flight training, but also an insight into the future of decarbonising flying."
