2020 starts with growth, although UK disappoints

There were 56,571 departures recorded in January 2020 according to WINGX`s monthly Business Aviation Monitor published this week.

This figure represents a 4.5% increase year-on-year (YOY), equating to 2,436 additional departures. Whilst January was up by 14% compared to the post-recession low point in 2016, it is still down by 7% compared to pre-recession high in January 2008.

Big increases in activity in France and Germany contrasted with a large drop in flights from the UK. Additionally, Switzerland, Spain and Italy enjoyed a strong growth in flights.

In France the growth came from increased Large Jet activity, up 8% YOY. Germany had fewer Large Jet sectors, but more Small and Midsize activity. The UK decline came mainly in Prop activity.

Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic saw the biggest increases in Charter and in Private activity, Turkey and Norway were well up. The UK Charter market declined by almost 10% YOY.

January 2020 YOY trend

Big increase in activity in France and Germany, with conversely a large drop in flights from the
UK. Also big increase in flights from Switzerland, Spain, Italy.

Sectors

Activity out of London this month was slightly up, with Large Jet activity well up. Small and Midsize activity gained 10% out of Paris and Prop activity in Geneva was up by 18% YOY.

Flights within Europe were well up on the -1.2% trend. January saw 799 flights from Europe to North America, an increase of 10%. Flights to Africa were also up, but to Asia-Pacific, 8% down.

There was stand-out growth this month in flights of 1.5hr-3hr, up by 9% YOY. Also strong growth in flights >6hr, although Heavy Jets flew 10% fewer of these sectors YOY. Super Midsize jets had by far the strongest YOY growth in activity, with sectors up by 15%.

Departures by country

Airports

Last-12-Months trends remain negative for almost all the top airports – Farnborough UK (EGLF) being the notable exception – despite a strong YOY in January. (Here Geneva was the exception). Flights out of Vnukovo (UUWW) were up +15% YOY.

Large Jet departures from Geneva slumped 13% YOY, whereas they were up 5% from Zurich. Nice also had a decline in Large Jets, with Biggin Hill seeing a 30% spike.

Richard Koe, Managing Director of WINGX, comments: “January’s relatively strong growth YOY clearly owes to more large jet activity particularly Ultra Long Range and Super Midsize jets. This was most apparent in activity in Germany, Italy, Spain and France, much less so than in the UK where overall activity continues to decline. The growth trends this month correlate to an increase in the active size of business jet fleets in Europe and point to recent fleet renewals amongst the largest international operators. The growth emphasis is in the charter market, with business jet owners flying less, as they did last year.”
