Crane Aerospace & Electronics has received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from the European Aviation Safety Agency for the SmartStem Wireless Tire Pressure System for
Cessna Citation business jets.
The Citation models covered under the new STC include the 550, S550, 560, 560XL, 560XLS, 560XLS+, 650, and 750.
With this STC, EASA joins the Federal Aviation Administration in certifying Crane’s patented SmartStem technology on nearly all Cessna Citation models. Operators can take tire
pressure readings in seconds without risking stem damage or gas loss, drastically simplifying the preflight checklist and saving money and time. Crane is in the process of certifying
SmartStem on additional business, regional, and large commercial aircraft with multiple regulatory authorities to meet customer demand.
“EASA certification on these Cessna Citation models represents a significant opportunity for SmartStem,” said
Rick Jones, Senior Vice President, Sensing & Utility Systems for Crane.
“We’re pleased that Citation operators in Europe can now experience the operational safety and cost efficiency benefits of
SmartStem.”
SmartStem tire pressure sensors replace traditional tire inflation valves and work with a unique piece of ground support equipment to read and display tire pressure, temperature, and other
stored information wirelessly. Readings take only seconds and can be done without removing the valve cap, preventing gas loss and stem damage. The recorded data can be used as part
of a tire management program to ensure tires are always properly inflated, improving operating safety and extending tire life.
